Anatomy of teeth

All teeth have same structure which consist of three layers – Enamel (outer layer), Dentine (middle layer) and Pulp (innermost layer) (Ref).

Enamel- Enamel is the hardest and outermost layer. It protects dentine and pulp from damage due to tooth cavity, wear and tear, infection and teeth sensitivity. It can still break down from plaque.

Dentine- It’s immediately underneath enamel on the crown and cementum on the roots. It provides support to the enamel to maintain its structure.

Pulp- Pulp is the innermost layer that contains nerves and blood vessels. It nourishes the dentine.

Cementum- It’s the root of the tooth which sits inside the gum socket, it’s a calcified or mineralized tissue layer.

Root canal- Anatomic space with the root of the tooth. Nerve, blood vessels and connective tissue passes through root canal to the pulp chamber.

Gum- Even known as gingival. It consists of the mucosal tissue that lies over the upper and lower jaw inside the mouth. It the soft tissue lining in the mouth. Gums surround the teeth and provide seal around them.

Type of teeth

There are four types of teeth- Incisors, Canines, Premolars and molars.

Incisors- Front 8 teeth on both lower and upper jaw are called incisors. This flat with thin edge teeth are sharp and help to bite into the food and cut it into smaller pieces.

Canines- Canines teeth are fang like teeth beside incisors.  It helps to tear up the food.
